The client

A 43-year career, one retirement, and a need to scale credibility.

Jeff Yelton spent 43 years building, running and selling technology companies, with stints at IBM and Ingram Micro along the way. One company he took from $45M to $245M in revenue and a successful exit. Then he retired.

He then launched CPHERE, a firm of retired C-suite executives helping mid-market IT companies and private equity firms with growth strategy, acquisitions and operational transformation. He had the expertise and the network. He needed a way to open doors with CEOs of $50M-$300M companies and mid-tier PE firms without leading with a sales pitch.

The challenge

Reaching people who don't already know you.

CEOs of mid-market IT companies and PE partners don't respond to cold outreach. They respond to proof: a thought leader, not a salesperson. Jeff came from a world of white papers, "kind of an old school, 1990s way to think about things."

He tried turning them into longer content himself with Gemini, ChatGPT and Claude. None of it reached the quality he needed, and none of it sounded like him. What he needed was a bound, published book that signals credibility before the first conversation starts.

“If he's got a book, he must know what he was talking about.”

What we built

Five books, dozens of topics, almost zero editing.

Full-length authority books for C-level executives, each built around one problem his buyers are already searching for.

01

Topic-first research

Each book targets one high-demand executive pain point, found by researching what IT executives search for: AI adoption, AI governance, standard operating procedures.

02

Built around his schedule

Jeff gave an outline and a voice interview. We handled research, writing, human editing and publishing. His edits on the first two books: almost none.

03

Sounds like him, not AI

"I literally thought I was going to read it and it was going to sound robotic. And it was obvious that that was not the case."

Then, his website

A site that turns five books into advisory calls.

We designed and built jeffyelton.com around his framework: five layers, one book per layer, proof from real engagements, and every page pointing to one action, an advisory call.

How Jeff used them

Books as a business development tool, not a royalty play.

At roughly $3.50 per author copy, Jeff built a direct-mail strategy that made every send count.

  1. 01

    Precise list segmentation

Segmented his HubSpot database by company size ($50M-$300M), type (MSPs, VARs) and geography to reach exactly the right executives.

  2. 02

A physical book with a handwritten note

Mailed author copies with a personal note, email and cell number, turning a $10-15 send into a warm, high-trust introduction.

  3. 03

    Region-by-region PE targeting

Started with the Southeast, then the Northeast, sequenced to keep any engagement that came in close to home. Central and West Coast are still untapped.

  4. 04

    An always-on authority signal

Kept copies in his car. Every conversation about AI or consulting became a chance to leave something that lasts.

The results

Compounding, not linear.

The impact built on itself with every book sent, every conversation opened and every stage won.

$125M

company that signed Jeff on retainer with a share of the exit, after he walked in and handed its executives his book

100 of each

of his books sent free to the executives at Masterminds of Manufacturing, an event at Bosch's South Carolina plant

$10-15

all-in cost per send: roughly $3.50 for the author copy plus $7-12 postage

They overachieved on everything they did for us. The quality of the work was outstanding.

It was a combination of the ability to scale with AI, merged with humans in the loop. That is the secret sauce I've not been able to find anywhere else.
